A meta-analysis is a subgroup of systematic reviews and is an approach for methodically uniting applicable quantitative and qualitative study data from various designated studies to create a solitary inference that has higher statistical power. This inference is statistically more robust than the investigation of a sole study, due to augmented quantities of subjects, higher variety of subjects, or accrued consequences and outcomes. The uses of meta-analysis include the following:
- To prove statistical significance with studies that have incompatible outcomes
- To create a more accurate appraisal of effect magnitude
- To offer a more intricate scrutiny of impairments, safety data, and advantages
- To investigate subsets with individual figures that are statistically insignificant
If randomized controlled trials (RCT) are used by the individual studies, mingling various chosen RCT outcomes would be the peak level of evidence on the hierarchy of evidence, followed by systematic reviews, which take all available studies on a topic into consideration.
The advantages of meta-analysis are as follows:
- Superior statistical power
- Confirmatory data analysis
- Greater capability to generalise outcomes to the general population affected
- Counted as an evidence-based resource
Meta-analysis also has the following disadvantages:
- Demanding and laborious to isolate pertinent studies
- Not all studies may offer sufficient data for inclusion and evaluation
- Needs sophisticated statistical techniques
- Study populations may be heterogenous
