  • Advantages and Limitations of Triangulation

Triangulation is a common method by which a researcher explores whether the outcomes from various methods, sources, hypothetical viewpoints, or researchers, agree/disagree with or balance each other. The objective of utilizing triangulation is to reduce, refute, or offset the deficits of a sole strategy, thus enhancing the capability to understand the findings. Triangulation is recommended because it has been suggested that inferences made by a researcher are more robust if varied methods result in findings that converge.

Triangulation is of four types:

  • methodological, where multiple methodological approaches are utilised to obtain data;
  • data, where the data collection involves multiple sources of data or groups of respondents;
  • investigator, where at least two researchers participate in integrative evaluation; and
  • theoretical, where varied theoretical viewpoints or explanatory frameworks are assumed.

Triangulation has various benefits, such as enhancing trust in research data, developing novel methods of interpreting a phenomenon, uncovering distinctive findings, combining or questioning theories, and offering a sharper awareness of a problem.

Triangulation, nevertheless, has some disadvantages. These include the need for a greater amount of time compared to single strategies, challenges of handing the extensive quantity of data, possible conflict due to investigator prejudices, disagreements due to theoretical frameworks, and limited awareness regarding the use of triangulation strategies.
